Biopsy under clinical evaluation only, at a specialist referral clinic, remains the mainstay of pre-cancer & oral cancer diagnosis. Adjuncts are used solely as an aid to enhance a clinical oral examination.
The VELscope® Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment System assists in the discovery of soft tissue abnormalities, which can be critically important in the fight against oral cancer.
Early detection of potentially critical information helps clinicians find patients most at risk to oral cancer.
Detecting tissue abnormalities as early as possible is potentially life-saving when using technology that is proven effective and less invasive, as well as easily implemented in a patient’s routine dental check-up.
The VELscope® Vx is a device that provides dentists and hygienists with an easy-to-integrate adjunctive mucosal examination system for the early detection of a wide variety of oral abnormalities, which can lead to serious oral diseases, including pre-cancer and cancer. Used in conjunction with the conventional clinical intra-oral and extra-oral head and neck exam, the VELscope® Vx facilitates the discovery of mucosal abnormalities before they become visible under ordinary light. The VELscope® Vx is a non-invasive device clinically proven to help discover occult oral tissue abnormalities.
The basic premise of tissue fluorescence visualisation is that it may enable clinicians to see the effects of cellular, structural, and/or metabolic activity changes in oral mucosal tissues by observing the fluorescence response of oral tissues in response to light excitation. Natural tissue fluorescence is caused by “fluorophores”. When fluorophores are excited by light of an appropriate wavelength (for example, blue), they emit their own light at a longer wavelength (for example, green). Abnormal fluorescence patterns aid the clinician in visualising unhealthy mucosal tissue that sometimes cannot be seen with the naked eye, including any tissue undergoing a change (which can occur in the oral mucosa for a multitude of reasons) such as premalignant dysplasia or oral cancer.
